Nycomed and Pharmacia were founded long before the pharmaceutical industry could properly be called an industry. Medicinal products were largely based on herbs and natural substances, and they were prepared and dispensed by pharmacists. From this tradition, two companies emerged in Norway and Sweden whose modern approach to pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and marketing made them pioneers.
