Carlton and Granada are sharpening the commercial focus of ITV.
Almost £1 billion a year is spent on network and regional programming,
more than any other commercial channel in Europe.
ITV1 invests in original drama productions (Dr Zhivago), sporting events
(The World Cup, Formula One), live entertainment (Pop Idol, The Brit Awards)
and blockbuster movies (James Bond) as well as the local news for each of the
ITV regions. 300 programmes were watched by over 10 million people in the
last year.
ITV2 is now frequently winning audiences of over 1 million, showing spin-offs
from ITV1, second airings of popular shows and Champions League football.
‘Brand extensions’ from ITV1 have been particularly successful such as Pop Idol
Extra which attracted up to 2.3m viewers making it the third most watched
channel at the time.
ITV News Channel is now being cross-promoted from ITV1 and is available
on all platforms.
